Tree Tenders

Uptown Tree Tender volunteers planting street trees along Gist St. using the TreeVitalize Program

Have a green thumb? Enjoy working outside? Looking for a way to serve the Uptown community? If so, the Tree Tender volunteer program may be an ideal fit! Tree Tenders are volunteers who assist their communities with tree plantings, pruning, general tree maintenance, and advocacy for new trees and the protection of existing trees. This could not be more critical in Uptown, which, at 12% has one of the lowest tree canopy rates in the City. Most of Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods have between a 25%-30% tree canopy rate.

If you are interesting in becoming a TreeTender in Uptown, you first need to become certified by Tree Pittsburgh. Information on certification and training schedules can be found here.

Even if you do not become certified, there’s plenty of opportunities to get involved in green activities that will make a difference in Uptown’s urban environment!
